Scans That Show Pain
(INFRARED THERMAL IMAGING)
The Pain & Injury Centre
has another unique tool that should be mentioned here. It
involves a state of the art technique known as medical
infrared scanning, which is a non-invasive, radiation-free
system using infrared thermal imaging that can be seen in a
sense as a form of photograph which shows pain.
In sports & injury medicine, thermal scans are not just
an excellent screening tool but additionally can help both
damage limitation and recovery; they are used for:
- Regular screening to detect incipient damage prior to
serious injury.
- Detection of very early physiological indications of
inflammation, stress and potential injury and the
cause of niggling problems that keep recurring. (For
example early detection of a stressed tendon and/or
stress fractures can be detected up to two weeks
earlier than by routine clinical examination.)
- Monitoring reaction to treatment of injury and also
reaction to post injury training programmes, indicating
whether programmes need re-assessing during the return
to peak performance.
- Helping diagnosis and locating of injury and can be the
best guide as to the most appropriate course
of treatment.
